当今世界各国都在寻找石油的替代品。生物能源作为可再生能源，有望减少能源需求中对石油的依赖程度。中国对石油的需求正以惊人的速度增长，已经成为世界第二大石油消耗和进口国。因此中国政府特别重视生物能源的研究和发展。从2001年开始，启动乙醇汽油（E10）计划。迄今为止，全国已经有5个燃料乙醇生产厂家，有10个省份在使用E10乙醇汽油。 2008年燃料乙醇市场供应量达到了160万吨。中国生物柴油标准（B100）于今年5月份正式颁布，B5标准正在制定。目前中国已有数十家生产生物柴油的企业。但是原料来源一直是生物柴油产业发展的瓶颈。根据《可再生能源中长期发展规划》确定的发展目标，到2020年，生物燃料乙醇年利用量将达1000万吨，生物柴油年利用量达200万吨。
为总结交流世界各地生物燃料开发利用的成果，更好地服务于企业、高校及研究所，并为政府决策提供建议。第5届国际生物能源会议（World Bioenergy Symposium，简称WBS）将于2010年9月15-17日在苏州召开。会议由清华大学与美国明尼苏达州农业厅共同主办。会议将邀请来自世界各地的政府代表、学术界代表和企业代表等就全球生物能源应用现状、技术研发进展、原料供应及政策支持等广泛内容进行交流。
